Giving directions "island style" relies on landmarks rather than north, south, east, or west. Whether driving or on foot, while you are here there are a few important landmarks that will help guide you to your destination and back again: mauka (towards the mountains) and makai (toward the sea) are two phrases commonly used. On Oahu, ewa is generally toward the west and Diamond Head is toward the east. You may also travel "windward", indicating the windward Kailua/Kaneohe side of the island. Honolulu is mostly referred to as "town".
