In just 15 years, Kamehameha the Great unified the independent chiefdoms Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kauai. The formation of the Kingdom of Hawaii brought about the end of the feudal society and the birth of an independent constitutional monarchy modeled after the great European empires. The two dynastic families, Kamehameha and Kalakaua, ruled Hawaii until 1893. Queen Lilioukalani, the last ruling monarch, was deposed in 1893 when the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by the U.S. government. There still remains evidence of Hawaii's monarchy in the Iolani Palace, Royal Grounds, and the Bishop Museum.
