Legacy is as important to this highly ritualized form of dance as the choreographed movements. Referred to as the "soul of the Hawaiian language," hula balances innovation and creativity with a commitment to preserving ancient traditions. The obligation is perpetuated through a kumu hula, an esteemed master and guardian of hula, who passes on not only the styles and motions but the dignity, poise, and pride that are required of students of this art form. The two prevailing styles are the less formal hula auana, often performed with music accompaniment, and the ancient style hula kahiko which incorporates mele (chants) and percussion instruments.
